Failure is the complete lack of success. Despite many individual’s abilities to recover from a slight fall, true failure should be avoided because it causes not only pain and suffering for the self, but also for others. Nowhere is this more clear than in the cases of Hamlet, Enron, and 1984.

In Hamlet by William Shakespeare, Hamlet and the Ghost of Hamlet doggedly pursue revenge, but end up killing the entire court. Hamlet, knew the futility of his plans- as evidenced by his attempt to send his love, Ophelia, to a nunnery – however he refused to give them up. His thoughtless, stubborn pursuit not only killed the intended usurper, but also the entire court. This tragedy is unacceptable and should have been avoided, because the entire court because collateral damage.

In addition, the Enron scandal was a failure that caused unacceptable pain. Albeit, the company made no true deception to its investors; however, the fall of one of America’s most successful companies hurt or wiped out the lifesavings of many and should have been avoided.

Finally, Winston from 1984 by George Orwell commits a gross failure against humanity – the surrender of his mind to the Party. Sympathy for Winston’s plight makes his failure no less significant in terms of the pain it causes or the desirability of avoiding his failure. In fact, be demonizing Winston’s assailants Orwell proves that every individual ought to become a Winston who succeeds.

Although we may learn from slight stumbles, a true fall is complete and irrecoverable from. Thus, they should be avoided without causing pain and suffering for others.

He did not wish to take up arms against them, yet he wished to over come their rule. His solution embodies who Gandhi was – a leader of nonviolent protest.

For Socrates, Pasteur, and Gandhi, overcoming challenges forced them to discover what they stood for. This applies to all of us because without challenges, we lack the motivation to define ourselves.
